- Attila Street

- 24 hours ahead
Mat Pilates is Pilates in its original form: on the mat, without a machine, working with your own body weight. Joseph Pilates wrote his classical sequence for the mat as well.
Control from the centre
The class builds on the deep muscles of the trunk: the abdominals, the lower back, the pelvic floor and the muscles around the hips, which Pilates calls the powerhouse. We start with a warm up, build the main part from classical mat exercises and their variations, and finish with stretching and a cool down. We move slowly and precisely, and with every repetition we pay attention to the breath and to the position of the spine and the pelvis. Now and then we add small equipment, such as a Pilates ball, a resistance band or a roller, but your main tool is your own body.
This class is for you if
- you want to learn the basics of Pilates or go deeper into them,
- you want a stronger core and better posture,
- you are looking for a class next to the reformer that you can carry on at home,
- calm, attentive movement that focuses on quality appeals to you.
What should you bring?
We provide the mat and all the equipment; you only need comfortable workout clothes that are not too loose, so the instructor can see your alignment. We recommend grippy Pilates socks. Water and a small towel come in handy.
Common questions about this class
What is the difference between Mat Pilates and Reformer Pilates?
The principles are the same: work that starts from the core, control, precision and conscious breathing. On the reformer the springs both assist and resist; on the mat you hold your own body weight, without a machine. The two complement each other well, and what you learn on the mat you can carry on at home.
Can I join as a beginner?
Yes. We build up the basic exercises step by step, and every exercise has an easier and a harder version, so you can work at your own level.
Where is the Mat Pilates class in Szeged?
Studio classes run in our Attila utca room, in the city centre.
When do I need to check with a doctor first?
In case of an acute injury, hip or knee replacement, advanced osteoporosis or pregnancy, ask for medical advice before joining, and tell the instructor about your condition.
Should I start with Mat Pilates before the reformer?
You can start with either. Mat Pilates is a good first step if you want to learn the basics of Pilates or also practise at home; for the reformer there is our Beginner Reformer Pilates class, made for people meeting the machine for the first time.
What equipment do we use in class?
Your main tool is your own body; now and then we add a Pilates ball, a resistance band or a roller. We provide the mat and all the equipment.
Can I come if my lower back or neck hurts?
Tell the instructor before the class, and we adjust the exercises to you. With acute or radiating pain, or pain that comes with numbness, see a doctor first.
